(Washing & Shrouding) Procedure & Prerequisites

We always begin with the name of Allah, the Beneficent and Most Merciful (Bismillah Hirragh Manir Ragheem)

 

What we will need to perform the Ghusl

1. The Wash Bier (Manie Kartel) - which should have an opening for the water to drain out.

2. A 5 Litre container (or similar)which will be used for the water transfer

3. A water jug (which will be used to pour the water over the body

4. An Oval tub which will be used to catch the drained water

5. Preferably luke warm water (cold if warm water is not available)

6. A flat cotton sheet to cover the body

7. 1 towel to cover the private parts (under the flat sheet)

8. 2 to 3 towels (any colour) which will be used to dry the body

9. A bar of scented soap

10. 10 small cloths (about face cloth size), which you can cut if from the white kaftan / Linen as well.

 

The Ghusl Procedure

1. Place the Wash Bier in the direction of the Qiblah (with the outlet drain closest to the Qiblah)

2. Place the oval tub under the drain

3. Lay the body on the Wash Bier on its back

4. Cover the body (Including the face) with the big cotton sheet

5. Remove the deceased clothing and bandages (Ensuring that removing the bandages will not result in bleeding). If bleeding, put on a clean bandage.

6. Place the towel over the private parts (under the flat sheet covering the body)

7. Pour water over the body

8. Perform the Istinjaa on the deceased:

Preferably choose one person to perform the istinjaa

9. Pour water over the deceased & massage stomach gently, at the same time raise the body to a sitting position to remove all impurities. Perform three times

Using the left hand with a glove or tie a cloth, wash the private parts thrice with soap and water. Pour water each time you apply soap and with a clean cloth

10. Perform the Ghuzl on the deceased:

Place cotton wool in ear, nose and mouth to prevent water to enter, Wash face, head & beard with soap and water.

Wudu (Ablution):

Avoid water entering the mouth or nose, clean mouth three times with separate cotton wool used each time.

Clean each nostril three times with rolled cotton wool using new cotton wool each time.

Wash face three times

Wash right arm thrice and then left arm thrice

Wash the forehead thrice

Wash the ears thrice

Finally wash the right foot thrice & left foot thrice.

Ghusl:

Lie the body on left side by placing your right hand under the neck & placing palm under the right shoulder. Tilt the body to the left so that the right part of the body is exposed for ghuzl. Pour water over the right shoulder down to the toes three times.

Now lie the body on the right side by sliding your left hand under the neck & placing your palm on the left shoulder so that the left part of his body is exposed for ghuzl. Pour water over the left shoulder down to the toes three times.

Lie the body flat on its back & pour water thrice over the entire body from head to toes including private parts.

Remove all cotton wool

Ghusl is now complete

Dry and Cover the body from shoulder to feet with a clean sheet, remove wet sheet & proceed to the next step - Shrouding the Deceased
